Word records: the strangest words in English

Our tools handle words of 2 to 15 letters, so every record here is within that limit. Longer words exist; they are not in our list.

The longest words with no repeated letter

A word that uses each letter only once is called an isogram. The two longest in our list have fifteen letters each:

UNCOPYRIGHTABLE is the one people remember. It is a handy test for a word game rack too: fifteen different letters and not one repeated.

Words with no vowels

Counting only A, E, I, O and U as vowels, our list has 121 words without one. 101 of them lean on Y, which works as a vowel in words like RHYTHMS and CRYPTS.

CRWTH (a Welsh string instrument) has no vowel and no Y at all; W does the vowel's work, as it does in Welsh.

Only a handful of words contain A, E, I, O and U exactly once each, in alphabetical order:

The longest palindromes

A palindrome reads the same in both directions. The longest single words in our list have seven letters:

Words typed on one keyboard row

TYPEWRITER is the famous one: ten letters, all on the top row. The bottom row (Z X C V B N M) has no vowel, so it spells almost nothing.

The most anagrams

The biggest anagram family in our English list has 12 words made from A, E, P, R and S, among them SPARE, SPEAR, PARSE, PEARS and REAPS. The full story is in what is an anagram.
