What is an anagram? Meaning, examples and how common they are

Anagram meaning

An anagram is a word or phrase formed by rearranging the letters of another word or phrase, using every letter exactly once. LISTEN and SILENT are anagrams: same six letters, different order. The word comes from Greek ana (back, again) and gramma (letter).

Two rules decide whether something is an anagram: it must use all the letters, and each letter only as many times as it appears. STAR and RATS are anagrams; STAR and START are not, because START has an extra T. Spaces, capitals and punctuation are usually ignored.

Types of anagrams

• Single-word anagrams: one word becomes another, like CATER, CRATE, REACT and TRACE.
• Phrase anagrams: a word or phrase becomes several words. DORMITORY becomes DIRTY ROOM, and THE EYES becomes THEY SEE.
• Antigrams: anagrams whose meaning is the opposite, or close to a joke about the original, like FUNERAL and REAL FUN.
• Not an anagram: a smaller word made from some of the letters, like RAT from START. That is what a word unscrambler finds, and it is useful in Scrabble, but it is not an anagram.

How many English words have an anagram?

We grouped all 168,406 words of the ENABLE list by their letters. 28,560 words, or 17.0%, share their exact letters with at least one other word. Together they form 12,265 anagram families.

Length changes everything. Short words run out of new combinations quickly, so they are full of anagrams; long words almost never have one.

The peak is at four letters, where 52.4% of words have at least one anagram. At fifteen letters it falls to 0.6%: only 20 words.

Most families are pairs: 9,549 families have exactly two words and 1,903 have three. Only 3 families reach ten words or more. The largest has 12 words, all made from A, E, P, R and S, including these:

The longest pairs in our list have fifteen letters, the maximum our tools handle: ALGORITHMICALLY and LOGARITHMICALLY, ATTENTIVENESSES and TENTATIVENESSES, AUTORADIOGRAPHS and RADIOAUTOGRAPHS. Among words people actually use, the longest pairs include:

Anagrams in other languages

We ran the same count on the word lists of the other five languages on this site. The differences are large:

French comes first by a wide margin. Its biggest families are mostly verb forms: SATIRE, SERAIT, RESTAI and RETAIS all use the same letters, and French verbs have many forms. Our French list also drops accents, which lets a few more words match. Dutch is last, likely because its long compound words rarely have a partner.

How to check if two words are anagrams

Write both words in alphabetical order of their letters. If you get the same string, they are anagrams. LISTEN and SILENT both become EILNST. This is exactly how our tools work: the anagram checker compares two words or phrases this way, and the anagram solver looks up every word, and every phrase of two or three words, with the same letters.

Counts use the full word lists behind our tools: ENABLE for English (public domain), Grammalecte for French, OpenTaal for Dutch, and the Hunspell and Norsk ordbank lists for Swedish, Danish and Norwegian, words of 2 to 15 letters.
